Kadamati
Akram Khan Company
2018 Mass Movement Director
In collaboration with 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary, Edinburgh International Festival, Théâtre du Châtelet and Théâtre de la Ville, Kadamati brought together dancers and communities of all backgrounds and abilities to experience a collective creative process across two major European cities; Edinburgh and Paris.
Marking the centenary of the final year of the First World War, this profound and moving piece draws on themes of identity, migration, and hope, with the support of the powerful, epic music by Nitin Sawhney.
At once spiritual and universal, Kadamati – meaning ‘clay’ in Bengali – conjures up the idea that we are somehow all connected, and it is vital to return to the essence of the ritual and the body as part of a unified movement.
The work was performed by 300 young people at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, during the Edinburgh International Culture Summit and Paris gathered 713 dancers of all ages in the forecourt of Parvis de l’hotel de Ville.
Watch the Paris performance
“[Jennifer] has all of the qualities that are essential to nurturing dance in any community. She commits to care, compassion and doesn’t compromise on quality.
We knew that if the performances of Kadamati in Paris and Edinburgh in 2018 were to be a success, we would need to have Jennifer on board. She was the driving force behind these projects”

Watch the Edinburgh performance
“Kadamati was a complex project, but working with Jennifer made the whole process a pleasure. Her creativity, captainship and charisma, engaged every individual she connected with. She has a unique ability to lead from within, drive, challenge and champion.”
